30/04/2014 - “Wounded Cities”: Visual Representations of Conflicting Identities in Northern Ireland
On 30 April 2014, the Metropolitan University Prague kindly hosted another of the STAR seminars: Anya Gromilova (PhD. candidate at IRES) – “Wounded Cities”: Visual Representations of Conflicting Identities in Northern Ireland. This seminar invited a discussion of post-conflict Northern Ireland and the importance of the “visual construction of identity” there.
What can changing urban realities in post-conflict cities such as Belfast tell us about how a society deals with its recent past? Moreover, what is the role of government in the creation and control of the visual landscape of these cities? Ultimately, the seminar aimed to elaborate both the potential and the limitations of the visual in healing the “wounds” of divided societies along their way to reconciliation.
