02/04/2014 - Were there Gypsies in Sixteenth-Century Ireland?
We would like to extend our most cordial invitation to students and members of the general public to the first STAR Discussion of the 2013/2014 summer semester organised by the Department of Anglophone Studies and the Department of International Relations and European Studies at Metropolitan University Prague!
By the fifteenth century, Gypsies were beginning to migrate from their heartland in the Balkans to Central and Western Europe, where they were received with an intriguing combination of tolerance and hostility by their host societies. But did Gypsies reach as far as Ireland? Dr. Power makes the first attempt to solve this question. The discussion reveals new information about the Gypsies and Europe, as well as offering an insight into how historical research is conducted.
STAR (Student Audience for Research) runs a series of free seminars every academic year. The seminars are designed for students from MUP Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral Degree programmes, as well as for all interested public from other institutions.
